Little Steps

When I was about 6 years old, my first experience with gardening was growing carrots in a pot.  I can’t remember whether I ate them or not, but I remember being amazed when their fine green shoots came out of the soil.  I couldn’t believe that putting some seeds in the soil, carrots would grow just like my dad said they would.  He reassured me everyday when I went to check on my pot of carrots that they would grow, I had began to give up hope.  Then almost overnight there they were, and I watched them grow from there.

Lots of plants can be grown in pots.  They don’t have to be ‘flash’ pots, reuse the ones from plants bought at the nursery.  Or for a cheap pot choose terracotta.

You can plant herbs like parsley and basil.  The cook of the house will love adding your fresh herbs to their cooking.  Lavender and rosemary are great in pots to.

Tomatoes and basil do fantastic in pots.  Plant them together and they will keep the bugs at bay!  What about a lemon or mandarin tree in a pot?  Lots of fruit trees can now be grown in pots.  You can even buy strawberries, watermelon and rockmelon seedlings suited for pots at larger garden centres.

Maybe there is an area in the garden where you can have your own vege patch.  I remember the thrill of digging up a pile of potatoes.  As we dug each mound, counting each potato like it was gold.  You can also grow potatoes in a Hessian sack.

Whatever you decide to plant, enjoy the experience, getting your hands dirty and bringing something to life.
